Preparing for Orthopaedic Surgery: What You Need to Know

As the third most common form of surgery in the country, orthopaedic surgery is something that many Australians will be preparing for at some point in their lives. It is said that up to 3.4% of Australians will go through a joint replacement procedure, whether that be for their hip, knee, shoulder, elbow, wrist, or ankle surgery, with numbers from the Australian Institute of Health and Welfare putting orthopaedic surgery as making up approximately 15% of all elective surgeries as of 2017. With that being the case, it’s important for patients to know what the next steps of their journey will look like, and what they can expect from their experience in private care.

Understanding Reasons For Orthopaedic Surgery

There is no one reason that a patient may require a joint replacement or other orthopaedic procedures. Rather, there can be a wide variety of conditions and issues which may lead someone to seek a surgical solution.

Some of the more common reasons for seeking out orthopaedic surgical options include:

● Age-related joint degeneration, such as osteoarthritis, which wears down cartilage over time

● Inflammatory arthritis, like rheumatoid arthritis, or other autoimmune conditions affecting bones and joints

● Sporting injuries, such as ligament tears or joint damage

● Trauma or fractures, which may require surgical intervention to restore function

● Genetic conditions, like avascular necrosis, leading to bone or joint degeneration

● Wear and tear from prolonged joint use, particularly in older adults

● Severe joint infections or, in rare cases, certain cancers affecting the musculoskeletal system.

As you can see, whilst joint replacements are often associated with older adults and wear, there are many different reasons that one may seek out support. Regardless of the underlying cause, our team at Adeney is dedicated to addressing these conditions with care, precision, and a focus on your individual needs.

Preparing for Orthopaedic Surgery

What to Expect for Your Surgery and Hospital Stay

At Adeney, your safety and comfort are our priorities. Here’s what to expect during your admission:

Day of Your Procedure
Your Anaesthesia Consultation

Before your procedure begins, you will have a dedicated consultation with your anaesthetist. This is your opportunity to discuss any questions or concerns about the anaesthetic itself or how we will manage your pain after surgery.

Our priority is always your safety and comfort throughout the entire surgical journey. We encourage you to speak openly. There is no such thing as a silly question.

Your Surgery

Once your consultation is complete, a friendly staff member will escort you to the operating theatre.

At the end of the procedure, you will be gently transferred to our Post Anaesthesia Care Unit (PACU), commonly called the recovery room. Our highly experienced recovery nurses will monitor you closely as the anaesthetic wears off. It is perfectly normal to feel sleepy, a little confused or groggy during this time. It’s common to not remember much (or anything) about your stay in PACU.

Your Recovery

When you are fully awake and stable, you will be moved to your private room on the ward if you are staying overnight (or straight to the discharge area for day-surgery patients).

Everyone recovers differently, so our nursing and medical teams will work closely with you to keep any discomfort under control and make your recovery as smooth as possible.

Please remember: open communication is key. If you are in pain, feeling unwell or even if something just seems not quite right, no matter how minor, tell us straight away. We are here to look after you.

Day Surgery Patients

If you are booked for day surgery, please also read our separate Day Procedure Unit Guide, which has specific instructions for arrival times, fasting and going home on the same day.

Safety Tips During Your Stay

Hand Hygiene: Notice if caregivers wash their hands to prevent infection. Don’t hesitate to remind them if needed.

Medication Safety: Confirm your identity before receiving medications and ensure they match your regular regimen. Notify staff if anything seems incorrect.

Preventing Falls: Surgery and medications can affect balance. Ask for help when moving, especially to the bathroom. Use non-skid slippers, turn on lights at night, and ensure your bedside table is within reach.

Visitor Guidelines: Encourage handwashing for visitors and discourage visits from those who are unwell to reduce infection risk.

Post-Surgery Rehabilitation and Recovery

Where relevant, Adeney’s comprehensive rehabilitation services are designed to support your recovery, whether in-hospital, at home, or during follow-up care.

In-Hospital Rehabilitation: Every joint replacement patient receives specialised physiotherapy during their hospital stay, delivered by our expert physiotherapists to promote mobility and healing.

Post-Discharge Rehabilitation: Our respected physiotherapists and allied health professionals provide home-based rehabilitation at a time that suits you and your family. This personalised approach ensures comfort and convenience for therapy in your own home and surroundings.

Continuum of Care Support: Our senior nursing team coordinates your rehabilitation, offering ongoing support, advice, and reassurance. You’ll always have someone to turn to with questions or concerns.

Prehabilitation: For joint replacement patients, pre-surgical rehabilitation strengthens your body and prepares you for a smoother recovery.

Please Note:

● You must have a responsible adult collect you from the hospital and stay with you for the first night at home.

● Travelling home alone, or using rideshare/taxi without an escort, is not permitted and does not meet the hospital’s duty of care.

● If you think you will have difficulty arranging this support, you need to contact the hospital well before admission to discuss options.

● Discharge time is fixed at 9:00 am, with specific instructions about where the person collecting you should park (underground carpark on Adeney Avenue or patient pick-up bays at the front entrance).

At Discharge

Before leaving Adeney, you’ll receive detailed discharge instructions, including:

● A written summary of medications, including names, dosages, and instructions

● Follow-up appointment details and schedules for home nurses or therapists, if needed

● Guidance on wound care, bathing, weight-bearing, and when you can drive or be alone

● Signs of complications (e.g. infection or blood clots) and how to contact your care team.

If possible, have a family member or friend present to take notes, as it’s easy to feel overwhelmed. At home, continue to prioritise safety:

● Use glasses and turn on lights at night to avoid falls.

● Remove tripping hazards like rugs or cords.

● Sit while urinating to prevent dizziness or fainting, especially if taking pain medications.

● Stand still briefly before walking to ensure stability.

Please Note:

● Lingering effects of anaesthesia/sedation are common in the first 24–48 hours (drowsiness, dizziness, nausea).

● Any take-home medications will be supplied by our on-site Slade Pharmacy, and a pharmacist will explain them to you before you leave. ● Our nursing team will go through your full discharge plan with you (and your family/carer) to ensure you feel confident and prepared.

● If you have any concerns after you get home, please call Adeney Private Hospital on (03) 7049 5000. Support is available 24 hours.
