Day Procedure Unit Guide

Our Day Procedure Unit has been specifically designed to deliver safe and streamlined care.
This model of care allows patients to undergo treatment and return home on the same day, promoting a faster recovery in familiar surroundings.

Your Day Surgery Journey

Below is a step-by-step guide to help you understand what to expect on the day of your surgical procedure.

Arrival and Admission

Upon arrival at the hospital, please proceed to Adeney Private Hospital Reception located on the ground floor of the hospital.  Here, you will finalise your admission paperwork.

We strongly recommend leaving valuables such as jewellery, mobile phones, wallets, and credit cards at home. Please note that the hospital cannot accept responsibility for lost or misplaced personal belongings.

Pre-Operative Preparation

Once admitted, you will be directed to the Day of Surgery Admission unit (DOSA) reception, situated on the hospital first floor. It is from there that you will be taken to a Pre-Operative Room, where a nurse will:

  • Complete a pre-operative health assessment
  • Place an identification wristband on your wrist
  • Assist you in changing into a theatre gown and managing the storage of any personal items

Anaesthetic Bay and Waiting Times

You will next be escorted to the Patient Waiting Bay, where you will wait to be taken into theatre. If you are accompanying a child, only one parent or guardian may enter this area.

While we aim to keep procedures running on time, delays can occasionally occur due to clinical priorities or emergencies. Our staff will provide you with regular updates if your procedure is delayed.

The Procedure and Recovery

At your procedure time, a member of our theatre team  will escort you into theatre for your procedure.

After your surgery, you’ll be transferred to the Recovery Unit, where you will be closely monitored as you wake up from anaesthesia. Once you are alert and stable, our staff will assist you to change back into your clothes and move you to Stage Two Recovery. Here, you’ll rest in a comfortable recliner chair and be offered delicious food and refreshments to aid your recovery.

Please let us know in advance if you have any dietary restrictions or allergies so we can cater accordingly.
For patient privacy and safety, family members are not permitted in the Recovery Unit, except when accompanying a child.

Discharge and Post-Operative Care

During your recovery, a nurse will go through your Post-Operative Instructions, including guidance on wound care, pain relief, medication, follow-up appointments, and emergency contact numbers.

Before your discharge, our team will either contact your designated support person and provide an update on your recovery and an estimated discharge time based on your recovery and any post-operative requirements.

Your support person will need to come into the hospital in person via the main hospital reception located on Ground level and accessed via Adeney Avenue. It is essential that you have a responsible adult not only take you home but also stay with you for the first 24 hours post discharge from hospital.

At Home

Your recovery continues at home, where you can rest in a familiar and comfortable environment. If you have any concerns or questions once you’ve returned home, please do not hesitate to contact us.

Please note: Adeney Private Hospital does not have an emergency department (ED). For urgent concerns, call Triple Zero (000)
or visit your nearest emergency facility.
